Misha Kolesoski: The Catacomb Suburbs

We don't get many musical adaptations and retellings of books. In the late 90s, there was Pranzo Oltranzista, and before that, there was the high concept War of the Worlds album. This is why I was very eager to listen to Misha Kolesoski's album, The Catacomb Suburbs - a musical retelling of the 18th Century Gothic novel by Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto.
This is quite an astounding take on things. Between the composition, the layers of violin, electronics, and vocals the set distinct moods for each part - something new reveals itself every time I listen to this album all the way through. It is  as moody and intricate as the book, itself (from what I remember), and I'm very tempted to dig out my copy and read through it while this album plays as an accompaniment.

Misha Kolesoski is versed in traditional concert composition, as well as electronic and multimedia productions. If you thoroughly enjoy The Catacomb Suburbs, you can follow Misha on Facebook, YouTube, and his official site.

fREEX

fREEX band is at the forefront of a new, “Free Expression” style of music that is a totally new genre. Just as Grunge sprung from the collective of spectacular 90s Seattle bands, great bands in the SF Bay Area right now are creating a sensation with new sounds. And fREEX is the reigning champ of this new scene.

Originating from the East Bay Area, fREEX has honed an alternative post punk sound that rocks. You can follow fREEX on Facebook, and check out their music on their official site, as well as iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon.

I recently had the great opportunity to interview fREEX and received some awesome answers from California:

Tersichore: What moved you to music instead of, say, financial statistics?
fREEX/Califiornia: I have always been into music. Through High school, University, and even Law School! The freedom of expression and communication of joy, angst, and rage is what makes playing music important to me.

T: How long have you been doing this?
fREEX/Califiornia: fREEX has been around for about ten years. We still find new sounds, music, stories, emotions. Hopefully each new song feels hot and fresh and urgent. Cut us off when we cover Louie Louie!

T: I'm not going to ask about your influences (because everyone asks that), but who are you listening to when you're not making music?
fREEX/Califiornia: I like new sounds and truly alternative music. Some older stuff still sounds fresh: Nirvana, Dead Kennedys, Prince. Too much Alt rock-today sounds like bad 90s rock.

T: Plans for the future?
fREEX/Califiornia: Perform and record. Delight and arouse and confront and entertain.

T: If you wanted to impress something on your listeners (or the readers of this article) what would it be?
fREEX/Califiornia: The world needs new expressions. Even commercial radio relies on finding the New New. You can seek it just as well as anyone else. Listen to a thousand songs to find a band that talks to you in a new way.

SAVV: Alternative Energy

Show me an artist who enjoys doing their own thing, and who sees the journey as the real experience instead of the celebrity status, and I will follow that artist so I can listen to the areas they are exploring, and how they turn their life and musical experiences into their own original work.

Enter: SAVV

SAVV has a deep foundation in the Golden Age of Hip Hop, but since going solo, has ventured into jazz, funk, trip hop, rock, and experimental sounds - in addition to mastering the technical aspects of production in the studio.

For example, take a listen to Day$, off of the upcoming EP, Alternative Energy:
The lyrical callbacks, the vocal experimentation, and the musical layers can leave you finding something new each time you listen to this, while remaining a cohesive piece unto itself.

Second up, we have Beautiful Music, and it is:
SAVV knows how to use words - combining a laid back, romantic tone with some bare, sweat on the sheets gritty lyrics that set a perfect mood.

Lastly, I offer you Forreal:
What can I say about this? If the previous two tracks were depicting moments and moods, then Forreal is like a personal and social mission statement - SAVV is here, he's going to take things to a new level, and if the rest of you can keep up, then we'll all be better off in the long run.

Can't get enough? (I can't - I've been spinning these on a constant loop, and I know you'll do the same once you listen.) Then you can follow SAVV for show dates and behind the scenes info straight from the studio over on Facebook and Twitter.

Al-x

I don't frequently review artists from the "pop" genre. However, to review pop artist Al-x as simply "pop" would be doing her a great disservice. Al-x covers the spectrum of high energy songs, electronica, dance (as in, her tracks are great to dance to, and she dances as part of her live performances), a touching acoustic ballads that make listeners take time to reflect.

So without further hesitation, here is the premier of Al-x's new video, Always:

In the world of Al-x, pop music covers an entire spectrum of moods, and she delivers unapologetically, much to my (and many others') delight. Al-x brings much more than amazing composition that works hand-in-hand with her lyrics - she dances and plays guitar. In other words, she is a force to be reckoned with - combining emotional, intellectual, physical, talents with (let me wax a little paradoxical here) untamed precision.

Al-x has an international following, and in drawing from her skills as a singer/songwriter/dancer, Al-x is able to tap those universal feelings and bring everyone together with her songs.

It has always been that, if I wanted to find songs that reflected changes in my own feelings or thoughts, I would have to build playlists and dig through a bunch of artists to find what I need - and by that time, things have passed. It can be very frustrating. With Al-x's music, I get all of that, and she always has something new just over the horizon.

You can get all of her music through iTunes, CDBaby and on the Official Al-x Site. To find out the latest news about Al-X, such a show dates, upcoming singles, videos, and more, you can follow her on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Red Martian: Ghost Into The Fog

It's not often that I get the pleasure of listening to a band that combines a layered experimental sound, judicious use of electronics, and vocals that call to mind the late, great Johnny Thunders. All of this and an awesome shoegaze sound that hits me right in the nostalgia. And if any of this is piquing your interest (and it should), then you will want to pick up Ghost Into The Fog - the latest album from Seattle-based band Red Martian.

Ghost Into The Fog is produced by Gordon Raphael (Strokes, Sky Cries Mary, Regina Spektor), and showcases the great composition and musical diversity that Red Martian has to offer.

You can purchase Ghost Into The Fog over on Red Martian's official site, and for the latest news on show dates and behind the scenes info, you can follow Red Martian on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

I had a chance to ask Red Martian a few questions, and here are their responses:

Tersichore: What moved you to music instead of, say, financial statistics?

Red Martian: We are actually moving from music to financial statistics. In fact, based on my calculations we will never amortize the cost of being a band. Therefore, it is a much wiser choice to go into financial statistics.

T: How long have you been doing this?

RM: Mathematically speaking .. 2015 - 1999 = 16 years .. apparently. But the numbers do not lie. Did you notice I have a degree in financial statistics? Just got it via FTP.

T: I'm not going to ask about your influences (because everyone asks that), but who are you listening to when you're not making music?

RM: BROWNIAN NOISE. And a mix of white noise. And more precisely .. crows and seagulls fighting over pizza humans provided for them. We also listen to the garbage collector making their rounds at 4:30am because apparently that is the best time to collect garbage on Capitol Hill!

T: Plans for the future?

RM: In the future, we will quit financial statistics and move into music making. Statistically speaking, this knights move (of sorts) is sound advice.

T: If you wanted to impress something on your listeners (or the readers of this article) what would it be?

RM: How about depress? this album is about losing, loss and being lost. It is about feeling something and feeling nothing. It is about realizing there are places you can never go to. It is about a giant elephant walrus and about a girl.

Nick Festari Releases Debut EP: This Is Me Slower and Faster

He’s already made a name for himself on the Euro Dance scene and, more significantly, in Japan, where bands and singers have performed songs written by him.

Now singer-songwriter Nick Festari has turned his musical magic to Pop, releasing his debut EP This Is Me Slower and Faster.

Nick writes, sings and performs on all six tracks on the genre-busting EP, placing romantic ballads alongside edgier, Punk-Rock tinged tracks.

The 80s Electro-inspired instrumentals for You Wanna Make Me Fly (I Know You Belong To A Dream) were born in Nick’s home studio one new year’s day. The song’s lyrics evolved from the romantic feelings Nick was developing for someone he was working with.

Wings Of An Angel is a beautiful ballad with a gentle piano melody. The heartfelt lyrics depict the story of a man walking in the cold rain and thinking about his failed relationship.

The upbeat The Song I Wrote For You is a throwback to Nick’s Eurodance roots. Its rich vocal melodies include catchy pop hooks you’ll be humming for days.

Listening to Green Day, Nick instantly fell in love with Viva La Gloria, which spurred him to create Don’t Throw The Dice. Piano, violins and Nick’s vocals gently open the song, before giving way to powerful guitar riffs that underpin a full-bodied Punk-Rock attack and anthemic chorus.

There Will Be No Prize is the first song which Nick crafted specifically for the EP. Inspired by The Lego Movie, this Electro-pop track, complete with catchy chorus, is about an online game where players try to build a new universe with Lego bricks as they grapple with the origins of the universe and its ultimate prize: total satisfaction.

Don’t Slam The Radio is a retro-style Pop ballad that Nick first released in 2013. Having received positive reviews, he’s given the song an orchestral makeover for his new EP.

EP out now

This Is Me Slower and Faster was released on July 27 and is available via iTunes and Amazon.

Track Listing

  1. You Wanna Make Me Fly (I Know You Belong To A Dream)
  2. Wings Of An Angel
  3. The Song I Wrote For You

  5. There Will Be No Prize

Nick Festari wrote the lyrics, sang, composed, performed and produced all the music on the six tracks on the EP.

Qualia: Triptych

It's not often that I encounter music that pushes the listener to go beyond the audio experience. I recently had a chance to listen to Triptych - the upcoming EP from Seattle-based artist QVALIA, and it not only makes me want more, but it also makes me want to dive into each track and experience each layer of composition.

At first blush, these are tight tracks with smart lyrics and clever arrangements that fall somewhere between the realm of the post-New Wave music rom the 80s, puzzle/RPG games of the 90s, and full-blown movie soundtracks with shades of Hans Zimmer and Tangerine Dream. Dig a little deeper and the notes have texture, and evoke images - triggering synapses from the other senses as they try to keep up with your ears. Triptych is the sophomore release for QVALIA (solo artist, Michael Hazani), coming off of the soundscapes presented in the debut album, This is the Color of My Dreams (which you need to experience).

The Triptych EP is set to be released on September 15, 2015 on Amazon, Spotify, and iTunes, as well as on Qualia's SoundCloud & Bandcamp pages!. In the meantime, check out the official QVALIA site, and for the latest news, you can follow QVALIA over on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Luna Rise

Austrian-based band Luna Rise caught my ear a little while back, and I became captivated by the way they combine well-composed melodies with heavy and passionate music. I've listened to a few of their tracks, and their song, "Valentine" really stood out to me:

This song alone is a great introduction to Luna Rise, with powerful vocals that transition into light and lyrical bridges, and guitars that range from power chord progressions to intricately composed prog-rock flourishes. Undeniably metal, but with evident roots in garage punk, grimdark goth, and a touch of old school New Wave - Luna Rise is as enjoyable to listen to while sitting and writing, as they are when you're driving as fast as you can down empty roads in the middle of the night.

You can find Luna Rise on their official web site, and listen to their music over on Spotify and Deezer. Their albums are available through iTunes, Google Play, and NRT Records.

To get the latest news on what Luna Rise are up to in the studio, playing around, information about live shows, or if you want o get to know a great band - you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Glass Canons

I have a big soft spot for Americana. That's why I jumped at the chance to review Glass Canons, when they popped up on my radar.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas Glass Canons are an Alternative Americana duo (Kilynn Weber and Gabriel Guerra) - and their songs really capture the soul of the genre.

For example, check out their song, Glenvil:

Glenvil paints a very deep portrait or a state of being, mind, heart (what have you) that - if you've not felt it through personal experience - you WILL feel after listening to this song. I've listened to it at least ten times in a row, and each time I find an instrumental nuance and grow fonder of how the lyrics and vocals mesh perfectly with the music to move the listener.

You can check out Glass Cannons on their official site and on ReverbNation. If you want to keep up with their latest news, find out about upcoming shows, and just see what they're doing for fun, you can follow Glass Canons on Facebook and Twitter.

GRAIG MARKEL: Let Your Light Shine Through Video Premier!

Graig Markel is a multi-instrumentalist, an incisive lyricist, a musician that constructs startlingly raw, yet studious soul and rock masterpieces.

We're proud to premier the new video for the song, "Let Your Light Shine Through," here on our blog!

I love this video! It's visually creative, and the aesthetic really reflects the energy and musicianship of the song itself. The world needs more videos and music like this - fun, engaging, and packed with energy! Do yourself a favor and check out Graig Markel and the 88th Street Band, now!

Reditus: Persona EP

I've always been "that kid" who rushed out to get any album that was labeled as "experimental." Ummagumma? It goes without saying. Adult Themes For Voice? I was the first one to buy it. An album where the percussion is just the sound of a stapler, digitally altered? Sign me up!

When Reditus popped up on my radar with an announcement of their Persona EP, I couldn't get to my headphones fast enough.

Reditus is a three-piece (John Keith, Michael Patterson, Noisy Lingus) group based out of Chicago who manage to breathe life into the experimental genre by blending electronics, distorted vocals, keyboards, guitar, and beats that are impossible to get out of your head, even after the first round of listening.

It has been a long time since I've heard a tight trio make such larger-than-life sounds with a beat that makes it impossible to just sit still and casually listen. Full of energy and inspired by their post-punk roots, Reditus is posed to be the next big thing since The Real Thing.

Reditus released the Persona EP on the Screaming Match Productions label, and it is available on Band Camp.

If you want to know more about Reditus and get the latest news on songs and shows, you can follow them on Reverb Nation, Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter.

Mr. P Chill: Still Standing

Those familiar with the stylings of Mr. P Chill know him as a West Coast legend going back to 1992. One of the hardest working people in the industry, Chill comes from the Golden Age of Hip-Hop, working as a producer, Emcee, and touring tons of live shows. Now, almost 25 years later, Mr. P Chill is set to unleash his latest album, Still Standing, on August 28th.

Still Standing, marks Mr. P Chill's 11th solo album since 2002, and it's loaded with guest appearances from legends such as Lumis, Mr. Hooper, Peercee P, 2Mex, Spyder-D, while letting some of the new underground emcees play in his clubhouse.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to preview this album, and it is overflowing with positivity and power.

From the album's eponymous track, which is an autobiographical and existential reflection of how far Chill has come throughout his career - and he lets people know he isn't stopping anytime soon, to "You Got Me," which is Chill's ultimate fan appreciation track. "Spiritual Journey" (one of my favorites) has that atmospheric orchestration and jazz that evokes that hot summertime city feel.

On Still Standing, Chill shows that he's not only a great lyricist, but also knows how to set the mood for each track with judicious use of backing vocals, jazz, and funk.

Still Standing is a landmark release for Mr. P Chill. This shows off everything he's learned over the past two decades - on the stage, on the wild tours, and walking away from his 9 to 5 job (which he was doing ON TOP OF recording and performing 50-60 show tour schedules) and dedicating himself completely to the music industry and outdoing himself with every new album.

Mr. P Chill shows that through positivity, strength, and never forgetting your roots and the listeners who brought him where he is now, that - even almost 25 years later - he's still gaining momentum.

This summer, on August 28, 2015 Mr. P Chill's Still Standing comes out, and Sacramento Hip-Hop will be busting out all over.

Veronika Releases Most Anticipated Video For Single "CAMERA"

Veronika has released her latest visuals to the most anticipated record "CAMERA". The concept behind this masterpiece is its focus on current problems females face nationwide and globally everyday.

Veronika's music career began in 2012 through her strictly motivated decision to build up herself as a musician and as an artist. She came back to Ukraine and began her work as a musician in association with DJ and sound producer First Craft (Dmitriy Stefaniv) genius music writer who was spotted first ay the age of 14 by Sony label in Holland, and director Yevgeniy Timokhin who worked at that time with boys band KAZAKY featured artists in Madonna’s “Girl Gone Wild”; she met Timokhin through mutual friends during a casting for a TV reality show in Kiev in May 2012.

This is a one-two knockout punch of a powerful video, and equally powerful lyrics. The video evokes thoughts of female protests around the world, and everything that is wrong with personal objectification and men "putting in time" with a woman and feeling they are entitled to her body (and the violence that follows). The line "Give me your time and you will be rewarded" is a great indictment against the general perception of women by today's society.

I was lucky enough to interview Veronika, and here are her responses to the questions I posed:

Tersichore: What moved you to music instead of, say, financial statistics?

Veronika: I can't imagine doing something else but music, it's the way I express myself, deliver my message, making a change, living. Some people have lives and some have music. Originally I started to protest through my songs against discrimination and prejudgement against women, against violence toward women which I experienced in my own life, to stand for freedom of expression, religion believes and acceptance. We are all unique and we should not violate someone else's rights for self expression or being different or just being a human.

Tersichore: How long have you been doing this?

Veronika: I formed my solo project in 2012

Tersichore: I'm not going to ask about your influences (because everyone asks that), but who are you listening to when you're not making music?

Veronika: I listen to MJ a lot but when I'm driving or working out its mostly rap/hip hop music Jay Z, Drake, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Dr.Dre, Eminem also I like Will.I.Am. I like women empowerment message in Beyonce's music and I like to listen audio books bios mostly.

Tersichore: Plans for the future?

Veronica: Just take it all by storm!

Tersichore: If you wanted to impress something on your listeners (or the readers of this article) what would it be?

Veronika: My message, my cause for music and a reason why.
In songs- my favorite is definitely talking part intro/ bridge where I express sincere all what lies deep inside my heart, when I talk in my songs it feels like I talk personally to a person who listens it, even if it's a one way conversation it's still very meaningful, private and emotional.
You can check out Veronika on her own site, and listen to her music on SoundCloud. To get the latest updates about her videos, shows, and what she's up to, you can follow Veronika on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Bud Summers

I listen to music of all kinds, but I am an absolute sucker for a storyteller. Nils Lofgren, Bruce Springsteen, the brothers Davies (Ray and Dave) - if the artist can tell me a good story with a guitar, I'll sit for the entire set and still want more, when it's over.

Bud Summers is just such a storyteller.

Whether it's a comedy of errors told through a blues song, a character sketch of a woman at the other end of the bar, or a moment of introspection of a person recounting experiences and figuring out where to go next - Bud Summers delivers wisdom, combined with powerful guitar licks.

Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Bud Summers has those southern blues-rock chops that come through in every song, and one can't help but envisioning him playing at a darkened bar, or a midnight outing with dancing in hot weather and 100% humidity. (In other words, I hope he comes over the river to New Orleans, so I can catch him live). His songs combine blues with rock and smooth jazz, with more than a smattering of folk to make for an all-around great listening experience.

I highly encourage you to check out Bud Summers' music over on SoundCloud and ReverbNation, and pick up a few of his albums. If you want to follow Bud Summers to catch the latest news on his music and where he's playing next, you can catch him on Twitter and Facebook.

1700 Monkey Ninjas: Ahb Seshun

There is a lot to me said for the succinct track in electronic music. Way back when, I remember when Underworld started doing these magnum opus pieces (and there's a place for that), and ever since then, it has been very difficult to find tracks that are statements unto themselves that are under the five minute mark.

1700 Monkey Ninjas released their latest single, Ahb Seshun, which is exactly that the doctor ordered. Straight from the upcoming 1700 MN album, Know That Music Is My Life Blood, Ahb Seshun starts off as a fantastic piece of mathematic recursion, followed by a low and rumbling beat - building to a fevered and intricate composition and then, just before you think the fuse is going to go off and you're anticipating an explosion...there is nothing.

Fin.

Silence.

I can read too much into this, like how your synapses become very aware of what potential thought and energy really are, leaving you with no recourse but to transform that into the kinetic - but those words still fall short of  what I was experiencing each time I listened to the track. It's very difficult to sit and tease apart the layering of this composition, because by the time it reaches terminus, sitting still is the last thing I want to do. That is a very visceral thing that only a few artists are capable of doing to me.

1700 Monkey Ninjas is Ed Purchla, who thinks outside of the conventions and is willing to break anything we've become all too comfortable with over the years, while also distilling electronic music to its roots.

To get an idea of the concepts Ed Purchla has in his mind, one should study his art, and if you meditate on that for a good, long time, you may be able to extrapolate that to comprehend his music. I enjoy a good rubric, and the tracks present in Know That Music Is My Life Blood, and the earlier release, You Are The Storm, engage listeners and challenge them to actually think about the music and how they respond to it.

To find out more about 1700 Monkey Ninjas and Ed Purchla, you should check out this excellent interview from Weekend Notes.

GK: A New Take On Jazz

Having lived in New York, and calling New Orleans my home, I've been immersed in jazz - everything from the traditional jazz on Frenchmen Street on over to the more experimental projects from the likes of John Zorn. That being said, I'm always eager to hear a new take on jazz whenever and however it pops up on my radar.

Enter: GK

GK offers up a revitalization of jazz, infusing (and this is what sold me on it after listening to a few tracks) elements from the contemporary genres that can call jazz their origin. For example, take a listen to "Paint the Town," which has that strong jazz base that I love, while showing off the branches of the tree like Motown, Soul, and Funk:

Or "Love Around," which combines jazz roots with Rock, R&B, and Rap:

With smooth, yet intricate composition, and lyrics that border on listening to a mad scientist playing with words to see what they can do when combined, I've been hooked on GK's music and have been playing the tracks over and over (and you should, too)!

You can find GK on SoundCloud as well as YouTube - and if you want to keep up on the latest news and releases, you can follow GK over on Facebook and Twitter.

*******
I had the opportunity to interview GK, and he put together come very insightful answers:

Tersichore: What moved you to music instead of, say, financial statistics?

GK: I have a very deep connection with Sound, and I think music can help people out of the darkest depths and inspire people to the highest heights. Music is just a compilation of sounds that I feel has the ability to shape our perception of reality, and I hope to showcase a new perception. I really like Jazz and I want to use it in new ways and make it relevant for today, because it's the backbone of modern rock and roll. But I didn't think I would become a singer growing up, I didn't think I was good enough until about 3 years ago when all my years of singing instruction clicked and it became easier to sing.

Tersichore: How long have you been doing this?

GK: I've been singing since as long as I could remember, both my parents love to sing even though one of them can't so I kinda grew up thinking that it was normal to sing out loud. But I was enrolled in music organizations since I was 6 from piano, guitar, sax, to bass, however I'm not a good musician the only instrument I can play is myself. Although its helped me in my music composition, I've been in choir and musical productions since I was 12. But my High School Choir teacher is who I learned from the most and helped me become the singer I am today.

Tersichore: I'm not going to ask about your influences (because everyone asks that), but who are you listening to when you're not making music?

GK: When I'm not making music I listen to quite a variety of artists, my take on music is that if its good its good. And what I mean by that is, there are certain unwritten rules when making music and as long as their not violated then your good. Except Polka.

I really like dub-step, but I will say its hard to find good songs and artist usually their out of the UK, borgore comes to mind. Other than that Florence and the Machine, Kendrick Lamar, Queen, Ludacris, Nat King Cole, Micheal Jackson are the artists on my phone at the moment. But I listen to a lot more hip hop than I do pop music even though you can argue that they're the same now.

Tersichore: Plans for the future?

GK: I'm going to be start doing some shows in southern California once I've released my new song, Dark spot, hopefully by the end of the month. I'm in the process of creating an indie music video for Love Around at the moment, release date TBA. But My lyric videos can be found on my YouTube channel for those who are interested in singing along.

Tersichore: If you wanted to impress something on your listeners (or the readers of this article) what would it be?

GK: My music is an attempt to revitalize a style that has had a profound impact on the music world. Its not because I think its important for music culture, but because that's who I am. I look back to the older ways of making music as inspiration but I still try to blend apart of the culture today cause I live it. I could sing pop songs, or join an indie rock band but I make music to make people think and rock out a bit at the same time, 'cause that's what I like to do. I made these songs all on my own, no one told me what to do one step of the way, this is the unabridged me and I hope they enjoy.

Paragon Theorem: Inkwell

The latest album by Paragon Theorem, Inkwell, is an overstuffed bag of tricks that never lets up, and will leave listeners entertained, amazed, and inspired. From ballads to the majestic licks and vocals of Alive (For The First Time), the Connecticut bands expertly composes tracks that showcase crunchy distortion-addled chord progressions, complex picking and drumming, bass that is used for so much more than just a rhythm instrument, and vocals with tremendous range - all of which come together to deliver an album that is nothing short of brilliant. Paragon Theorem has no problem playing to the listener's intellect as well as the soul, often times eschewing the verse/bridge/chorus formula for pure artistic vision – taking the listener on a journey with each song.

Paragon Theorem are wrapping up their east coast tour in October, and (as shown in the video below) they are just as amazing live as they are in the studio:

Every track stands out on its own, from Fluoride (a simultaneous one two punch to authoritarianism and conspiracy sheep alike, with judicious sampling of JFK's 1961 speech about secret societies) to the past-paced and cathartic Absolution. Paragon Theorem's Inkwell is a must-have for anyone who loves both smart and emotionally-driven lyrics, backed my raw music punctuated by technical expertise. With Inkwell, Paragon Theorem, founded in 2012, have already earned their place among Dream Theater, Echolyn, and the more experimental Living Colour albums.

Paragon Theorem's Inkwell is available on iTunes, CDBaby, Google, Amazon, and other major digital distributors. You can check out Paragon Theorem on their official website, and follow them on Facebook and Twitter for all of their latest news and to keep up with their touring dates.

Backstruck

Punk & hardcore never went away, you just have to know where to look. I remember living in Pennsylvania - traveling all over the state to catch Submachine shows, and (a few years later) going up the East Coast to watch Pig Destroyer, and hanging out after A.C. shows with Seth Putnam (and his mom). Moving to Austin didn't really leave me with much access to live punk bands (that, and the music scene had shifted to more 3-chord power pop bands in that city), so I've been searching online for something to take me back to those small, cramped venues that were packed with people, and the energy could power a small country.

Enter Backstruck.

Backstruck is the brainchild of Ryan Mincey, and is hardcore punk in the vein of '68 and The Ghost Inside. That is to say, Backstruck has the sound that the music scene needs and has needed for years.

Check out the track Broken Shell.

That - like Backstruck's other songs - are exposed raw nerves - an agitation that cannot be kept inside any longer, an outpouring of what makes us human, that very few acknowledge.

If you want to keep up with Backstruck to get the latest released tracks and any upcoming gigs, check out their Facebook page. I look forward to hearing more from Backstruck, and if they start going shows, it will be a great excuse to drive back to my old stomping grounds to see them.

Armed with unique musical integrity and soul, Rey More's sound has distinct depth. Musically, he has an incredible talent for passionately delivering lyrics to impact the people listening to him - keeping the dance floor moving well into the night until sunrise, the next day. Rey More's artistic vision and versatile talent show the way to achieve your dream is to follow it, and never compromise.

Rey More has recently launched a new video for his hit single, Vete al Infierno, over on Daily Motion:

ALBIORIX

There are few synthwave artists out there who create original tracks that are able to transport me. Saturn just launched a debut EP - ALBIORIX - and it brings me back to the late-70s and early-80s by fusing analog sounds with modern electro and synthwave influences.

What I really enjoy about this EP is the judicious use of the noise envelope and that "space" around notes. Saturn's ALBIORIX really takes me back and makes me want to dig out some of Wendy Carlos' more experimental works - or maybe just remember the dark arcades of my youth and lining up quarters on the machine for my shot at playing Tempest or Phoenix.

Chilla Kiana

Born in Surabaya, Indonesia, 19 years ago, Chilla first took on piano music was when she was seven, and won many piano competitions awards.

Chilla complemented her musical repertoire by taking singing classes and at only 11 — when most girls are busy playing with their dolls — she had fun composing songs, writing lyrics and arranging notes by her self.

In Chilla’s early song-writing career (11), she wrote and composed is a religious Christian songs, called “I Belong to Jesus”.

When she was 13, she wrote and composes a Patriotic Song, named “My Indonesia” dedicated to her country.

“A while after, I got the chance to sing and release two English-language songs — ‘Loneliest Hour’ and ‘Jealous’. And on 2nd Top Position on Vevo after Carly Ray Jepson and Justin Bieber was on 3rd position at that time.

The Universal Music Group Indonesia then put me on contract, and finally, on October 2014, I got contract with The Walt Disney Company for the song of Disney Princesses “The Glow” in Indonesia Version.”

46 Clicks: Home

It's no big secret that I like music that's heavy on the distortion, with loud drums, throbbing bass, and vocals that carry the emotion of the words they are singing. Nirvana, Hum, The Flaming Lips, D-Generation, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone - the list is longer than the early 90s fad that made it popular, yet somewhere around 1997, it was nigh impossible to find the genre as radio stations switched to bands with a more "produced" sound.

Seeing a band like 46 Clicks made me happy in very irrational ways.

46 Clicks is a Sydney Australia-based power trio, and they have just released a new single, "Home." This is rock. This is saying to hell with conformity - even on a musical level - to tap into raw energy and let emotion and rock use you as their instruments - and that what 46 Clicks does so well: Music with reckless abandon. Rock in its purest, unrefined form.

46 Clicks (Wes, Doc, and Nicky) are self-described as "Sydney's first ever street rock band." They have worked hard to get where they are, and "Home" is the latest release from their larger project The Cuttin' Loose Experience, which they have been working on for the past year.

If you want more from 46 Clicks, you can visit their official site, or follow them on YouTube, Twitter and Instagram for the latest news, show dates, and videos.

Suburban Vermin: Headless Over Heels

It's not often that I get a chance to review punk bands, which is why I've been chomping at the bit to write this article about Suburban Vermin.

For some background: I grew up in New Jersey when Glenn Danzig was in The Misfits and The Ramones were playing public access shows on The Uncle Floyd Show (and let's not forget Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics). In the 90s, I was in Philly and going to see bands like The Fiendz, 7 Seconds, Weston, Face To Face, Blanks '77, and Submachine. Once the 2000s hit, finding decent punk music was very difficult.

After listening to Seattle-based Suburban Vermin, I can say punk is back. Not 3-chord power pop. I'm talking full sneer, padlock n' chain necklace, lace up your boots, you haven't had fun unless you left the show with a few bruises-style punk.

Do you hear that? We NEED more of this!

With their upcoming album, Headless Over Heels, the frenetic pace is non-stop, from the eponymous track to their cover of 4 Non-Blondes' "What's Up." Suburban Vermin don't try to be anything other than what they present, and you can neither deny nor ignore that punk never left, once you hear the fast tempo, crunching chords, and rasping vocals that evoke archetypical street-level punk in all its steel-toed majesty.

You can check out Suburban Vermin over on their official site, and you can keep up with the latest news, show dates, and album info over on their YouTube channel, Facebook PageTwitter, and Instagram

I was lucky enough to interview Suburban Vermin - Amanda Gamino (Vocals/Guitar) and Jason Vermin (Vocals/Bass):

AG - Amanda Gamino - Vocals/Guitar
JV - Jason Vermin - Vocals/Bass

What moved you to music instead of, say, financial statistics?
AG: Well we aren't the traditional musicians with a big heart and a dream who quit their jobs to live in the car until they make it or can't afford gas anymore. Jason and I both have day jobs, because the bills have to get paid, but don't get me wrong.. this isn't just a hobby, we have hopes and dreams to making it big so we can call this our day job!
JV: Free beer. Or discounted beer.

How long have you been doing this?
AG: Ive been in the band since 2008, so ive spent 7 years of my life dedicated to this band and I enjoy every minute of it.
JV: There was a very short period of time before Amanda joined the band. It wasn’t very good.

I'm not going to ask about your influences (because everyone asks that), but who are you listening to when you're not making music?
JV: I have a hard time listening to full songs let alone albums so short, fast stuff like the Ramones is always good. My favorite bands are They Might Be Giants, Nerf Herder and The Clash. I also really enjoy everything Buddy Holly ever did, The Mountain Goats, Pulp, Young Fresh Fellows, Alkaline Trio, The Buzzcocks, Cheap Trick, Doug and The Slugs, Pain, Social Distortion and Prince’s Batman soundtrack.
AG: I love listening to heavy, loud, screaming music like Lamb of God, Slayer, Asking Alexandria, but I also listen to some Kpop and the classic stuff like GnR, Led Zepplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Plans for the future?
AG: LONG TERM GOAL.. GET A RECORD DEAL THAT WILL PAY US ENOUGH TO QUIT WORKING! haha , BUT for short term, go on tour, play more shows, get our name out in the world as far as we can!
JV: Long Term, I definitely agree that I’d like to be able to support myself and any future family purely on music. I’m not sure in the future a record label’s gonna be the way to do that, but I’d like to think we’d be able to adapt. I really just want to play in as many basements and enormo-stadiums that’ll have us.

If you wanted to impress something on your listeners (or the readers of this article) what would it be?
AG: That we aren't that douchey band who sounds just like all the others on the radio. We are loud, not really punk, but most definitely not pop, and really enjoy making and playing music for people...ALSO we would love to drink with you!
JV: This is tough. I guess, always practice safe sex, don’t drive drunk, respect people no matter their gender or sexuality (or lack of), race and religion (or lack of), including yourself and please buy our record/comic book or we will starve.

*******

In closing, you NEED to pick up Headless Over Heels when it comes out. Fantastic bands don't make this stuff for free, and if you want them to continue making stuff (like I do) you should buy their music. If you can't do that, then at least spread the word to your friends so that they can pitch some money their way. Label scouts? If you're reading this (and I know a few of you do), get Suburban Vermin a contract! I want to hear what they can make if they have the time and funds to focus solely on the music!

Linzi Stoppard: Electric Violinist

Back in the mid/late 90s, I went headlong into the world of classical music - attending performances at Tanglewood, various symphony halls, and universities throughout New York and New England. I fell in love with the classics, and it wasn't too long before I discovered artists reworking those pieces (as well as composing original works) on the electric violin. It has such a grand and engaging sound, and in the right hands, will keep me rapt forever.

Enter Linzi Stoppard: Electric Violinist

Linzi attended the prestigious Suzuki Violin School at a very young age. From there, it wasn't long before she caught the eye of producers who convinced her to front Tattoo of Pain (a spin off of Lords of Acid), after which Linzi Stoppard took her talent to form Babe Instinct (the track "Disco Babes From Outer Space" was a Top 20 Hit in the UK, and "Fade To Grey" was a dance hit that swept Europe).

After much success Linzi Stoppard focused on creating her own sound as an electric violinist, which led her to form one half of the music sensation Fuse. In listening to Fuse's 2010 eponymous album, I was blown away. The way Linzi Stoppard uses the electric violin to transform classic rock anthems into driving and epic pieces is nothing short of amazing.

Do you hear what I mean?

Whether you are taking on an army, flying over the Azores, or folding laundry - Linzi Stoppard's electric violin mastery will make everything seem like a grand adventure and triumphant victory! I want to hear Linzi Stoppard playing an electric violin during everything I do throughout the day. The sweeping sound of her electric violin is simultaneously soothing and inspiring. Linzi's sound is the type that should come with its own cinematographer.

Here, check out Fuse's take on the music of James Bond:

Did you just buy something on sale? Did you snag a great parking space when you were out shopping? Was the train on time for you to get to work, this morning? Did you go out for coffee and end up recovering missing Hapsburg treasures from criminal masterminds? That medley should have been playing the whole time!

After watching a number of performances, Fuse is also visually captivating. Linzi Stoppard (and her music partner, Ben Lee) play on $1 M electric violins covered in Swarovski crystals. As if the music and Linzi Stoppard's playing weren't enough to fully capture your attention, there's a beautiful, gleaming gem encrusted electric violin thrown into the mix.

Still can't get enough?

You can check out Linzi Stoppard, electric violinist extraordinaire at the official Fuse site, and get the latest news on Linzi's own site and Facebook page. You can check out more of her videos on YouTube, and download Fuse's music directly from Amazon.

Kelley Karas: You'll Never Get To Sleep

I like good relationship songs. Let me rephrase that. I like songs about relationships that are good - as in the lyrics don't keep saying "baby, baby, I love you, I love you!" ad nauseum, but rather convey a depth (sometimes uncomfortable) that strikes a chord or memory.

Kelley Karas certainly hits that motif with her latest song, You'll Never Get To Sleep.

I've been listening to this song all night, and between the vocals and lyrics, which remind me of the alternative Grrrrl Rock of the 90s - and the unique sound of her guitar, which manages slight distortion which still having a very clean and crisp sound - and a chord progression and voice that get caught in my head, I want more. I want more songs! I want albums! (Can you tell I like Kelley Karas' work?)

Kelley Karas is a guitar playing songwriter that hails from the American desert. Current and Former Bands Include: The Negative Nancys (all girl punk!/power pop), Asterionella (shoegaze) and Robot Nixon (Pop Punk.)

Major influences include: Sunshine, Cacti and Highway Signs.

Weird? You betcha. Why be serious when there's fun to be had?

If you want more, you can follow Kelley Karas over on her official Facebook page.

Digital Lizards of Doom

I like fun music with smart lyrics. Mix some rock, some electronic grooves, and callbacks to my nerdy youth (not to be confused with my nerdy adulthood), and your have The Digital Lizards of Doom (DLOD for short). Yesterday, they released their video for their song, "I Don't Know How To Dance."

Video courtesy of Noize Cartel Records

This song is all too reminiscent of my awkwardness at clubs (and yes, I've been not-so-politely told to leave many times, while the bouncer hit on the people I was with), but the best part is how damned infectious the song is, and how I can't keep from moving to it!

With intricate layers that have slight hints of Queen, Thomas Dolby, Daft Punk, and Grand Buffet - with vocals that have that lilt of Chuck Mosely, I keep finding more nuances each time I listen. Throw in lyrics that paint a relatable (and funny) scenario, and I'm completely sold on DLOD's material.

If you want to find out more about DLOD, you should check out the official Digital Lizards of Doom site, where you can watch episodes of the DLOD webcast. Still can't get enough? Then follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

However, the very best move you can make is to buy DLOD's new EP, Dizzy Eko Makeover over on iTunes, Amazon, Beatport, and directly through their own site.

In closing, check out DLOD now!

Author's Note/Rant:

Once again, I'm going to remind you that artists love creating things, but if you don't show the love in return  and support them - be it buying their music or spreading the word to your friends who might also enjoy their stuff, then the scene for new music is just going to get smaller. I'm not just saying this as someone straddling between Austin and New Orleans - but as someone who loves to hear new material and wants to encourage more people to get into music.

Versus Shade Collapse: Straight Lines

There's a certain type of music that I yearn for, on occasion. This thirst typically results in me digging out my Jesus & Mary Chain albums or hunting down specific songs from Smashing Pumpkins or Siouxie & The Banshees. What I'm saying is, in order to satisfy that itch, I have to look back and cannot find it in the present.

That is, until now...

Versus Shade Collapse has just released their new single and video, Straight Lines:

Minimalist yet philosophically poignant in its lyrics, and complemented by rich musical composition, Straight Lines is a great song, and the visuals bring me to a place my mind has not visited in many years. You should definitely check out Versus Shade Collapse on Facebook, YouTube, as well as their official blog.

Versus Shade Collapse, a solo project from Colombian native, Los Angeles resident, mother, former high school teacher and wife. Versus Shade Collapse has been making songs without any formal musical education and rather uses melodies and lyrics that come into her head to take over and thus fulfill on her fantasy of making music.

In a quest to overcome fears, doubt, insecurity, and uncertainty. Following a new found passion for making music and videos, and with the intention of drinking life to the lees!

Versus Shade Collapse is poised to release a full-length, 12 song debut album on November 2015.

The Straight Lines video was shot in Medellin, Colombia on January 2015.

I look forward to seeing what else Versus Shade Collapse has in store for us, and want to hear more of their tracks!

Whiskey N' Rye: Sick Soul Summertime

There's a part of my brain that judges rock music by how many cars I could tolerate on the road while a certain song is playing. Aerosmith songs made after 1987 for instance, I can tolerate in a full-blown traffic jam (usually with the window rolled down so I can hear the traffic, instead). Certain Black Sabbath songs I can listen to in very light traffic, so I can weave in and out of the cars. Billy Joel? The car needs to be parked. In a garage. While I'm in another part of the house digging out my AC/DC albums.

This morning, while I was out driving from place to place, the latest single from Whiskey N' Rye, Sick Soul Summertime, popped up and after listening to it, I have come to a verdict:

One car. From the second the song starts, you want to flip off the vehicle next to you, floor the gas, and take in the big open skies as you move in one direction - forward.

Go ahead. Listen for yourselves:

Whiskey N' Rye is a rising roots-rock band out of Seattle “who seems to be on the fast track to stardom” (Indie Band Guru).  The band formed in 2013 and quickly became known for its explosive live show, touring nationally at some of the best clubs and festivals around (House of Blues, Crocodile, Harlows, Tractor Tavern, Secret Society, etc.). The debut album - a fusion of blues, rock, and Americana - has been picked up by over 200 radio stations across the country, as well as widely popular television shows and networks (The Real World, Kardashians, NASCAR, Discovery). Buzz now surrounds the band, whose online following has swelled to over 35,000 people.  Independent Music News has described their sound as “honest American rock music with soul.  The band is stellar and the songs are phenomenal.”

I had a chance to listen to their upcoming album, also titled Sick Soul Summertime - currently available for pre-order through the official Whiskey N' Rye site - and I can say that this is one of the few new bands that "gets" rock music. From the album's eponymous track to their cover of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long, to the soulful Saving Grace, Whiskey N' Rye shows that they drink deeply from the well of rock and their musicianship shows off a diversity that music has been sorely needed - as they have the tempo going at a million miles a second and then switch to a tender ballad, or a style that would bring a tear to any southern rock fan's eye.

Whiskey N' Rye's members are as follows:

Philip Lindholm: Guitar, Singer/Songwriter, Producer
Carson Dent: Drums
Marco Longo: Keyboards
Greg Pascale: Lead Guitar
Alex Atwood: Bass

Whiskey N' Rye is a touring band, and their live shows are jam packed (the footage in the video for Sick Soul Summertime was taken from live performances). If you want to know more about the band, or find out when they will be playing in your area, you can catch them on Facebook, Twitter, or get updates directly from their own site, and watch their latest videos on YouTube.

I need their new album in my collection. You do, too. One listen will tell you this is going to be marked by music historians as a classic album that the rock landscape has needed for a VERY long time!

Do you need more? Here are some great reviews of Whiskey N' Rye if you don't want to take my word for it:

"Whiskey N' Rye are here to bring a healthy dose of good ol American rock and roll." - Chris Marsh, Cross Radar

"...Seattle-based rock band Whiskey N' Rye are yet another success story bursting to be told. They're eponymous debut album is a soulful effort that is a pleasure to listen to and, like any proud product of the northwest, never forgets its roots...Rock on guys! You can officially count me as a passenger on the 6 a.m. Whiskey N Rye train."- Digi Indie

"Emerging with an allure that has not been seen since the early ages of rock, Seattle band Whiskey N' Rye has unleashed their self-titled album Whiskey N' Rye. As one of the most powerful releases of 2014, the album is an inventive production that bridges the elements of classic rock styles with contemporary American insight and artistic brilliance" - Glitter and Stilettos

"You'll have a hard time not tapping your feet as the album progresses through transitional stages of heavy blues explosion, and rock sensibility, without losing that pop sound at times. The sum of the parts work well, and if you were to take away one element, you would still have a strong alternative record, but when you tie in all the pieces, you get something outstanding, and that's what makes this a must have...If you see their names on the marquee, you better get a ticket, because this will most likely translate well into a live performance."- Sell Out Records

"There is no best way to describe the music of Whiskey N' Rye as they have such a unique and fresh sound that fuses elements of country and rock with some blues and alternative, making it impossible to pin down in one confined musical sphere...I really don't know if this album could be any better." - Rick Jamm, Jamsphere

"You are all phenomenal!!! I'm going to love playing your music!!" -DJ Skys, Indie Showcase Radio

"I love what Whiskey N' Rye is doing style wise. AMAZING stuff!" - Taxi
